Chinese Cultural Festival

PCA participated in the 2023 Chinese Cultural Festival at Mellon Park with activities such as bookmark making and face painting. The festival included Asian cuisine, traditional performances, games, and more.

Summer Field Day

PCA Youth Center Student Council hosted a field day at North Park. Stations included relays, tic-tac-toe, cup pong, themed races, and large group games such as capture the flag, sharks and minnows, water games, tug of war, and limbo.

2022 AAPI Heritage Month Book Drive

Through May 2022, PCA Student Council partnered with libraries, organizations, and schools to add books about Asian American and Pacific Islander heritage to local collections.

Design Seminar

Chris Ference, a designer and experimenter based in Rochester, New York, hosted a talk called "The New Wave of Designers." Participants learned about speculative design, discovering passions, pursuing creative careers, curiosity and observation, and networking with professionals.

Coding Workshops

PCA Youth Center held coding workshops during the 2021-2022 school year. Beginners used Scratch block coding, while more experienced participants built a Discord bot with JavaScript. Each group had time to work on an individual project.

Chess Tournament

PCA Youth Center held its first online chess tournament, with games played through chess.com.

Meditation Event

PCA Youth Center Student Council hosted a meditation event with speaker Eric Chen. The program introduced meditation as one way students can manage stress during the school year.

Breakout Room V.2

A year after the "Corona Crisis" breakout room event, PCA introduced a new online breakout event where participants played the villains. Participants solved puzzles, discovered clues, and completed themed tasks.

Lunar New Year Celebration

The PCA Student Council hosted a Lunar New Year celebration over Zoom with Chinese paper cutting, origami, cooking, and dancing.

Date: February 14th, 2021

• 2:00 PM Dancing: favorite dances, singing, and fun activities for grades 5 and under.
• 3:00 PM Origami: participants folded an Ox Head to celebrate the Year of the Ox.
• 3:45 PM Paper Cutting: participants folded and cut an Ox head out of paper.
• 4:30 PM Cooking: participants learned about Chinese culture and authentic Chinese dishes. PCA planned to create a cookbook from family submissions.

Shining Through the Holidays

To end 2020, PCA Student Council introduced Shining Through the Holidays. Participants shared pictures of holiday decorations, including DIY decorations, festive rooms, or brightly lit yards. Winners were selected by creativity, popularity, and overall festivity.

Photography Show

Submissions for the photography show were open until the end of November 2020. The four themes were light, holidays, animals, and nature. Judges reviewed pictures using creativity; color, lighting, exposure, and focus; composition; and clarity and quality.

SnapShot!

SnapShot was an online seminar about street photography, also known as candid photography. Participants learned to capture color to enhance their shots.

Meet the Speaker: Dr. Min Sun

Dr. Sun is an oncologist at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center and a senior photography enthusiast. He started shooting at the age of eight and enjoys capturing sports, wild animals, nature, people, weddings, and street photography.

Lost in Time Escape Room

PCA Student Council organized its second online escape room to help students have fun while routines were limited by the coronavirus. Teams cooperatively discovered clues, solved puzzles, and accomplished tasks to progress toward a goal in a limited time.

TriviaPOP

PCA Student Council introduced online Trivia Pop for students in grades 2 to 7. Teams competed in rounds with topics including math, history, science, outdoors, sports, literature, and culture.

Pittsburgh Online YouTuber Program

The PCA Online YouTuber Program gave everyone an opportunity to learn something new or explore interests through free classes taught by volunteers. Topics included music, science, history, reading, book club, Lego, geography, fashion, Shakespeare, knitting, trivia/game, craft/home decoration, mental health, and coding.
